Description

I am a qualified nurse specialising in workplace wellbeing. I have a BA Hons in English and Media Communication with my research focused on identity and how cultural representations in society influences, not just socio-economic, but also health outcomes.

The name & concept of Lemur Health was born from a television documentary showcasing the culture and behaviour of the lemur community working together for the good of the colony. Lemurs taking care of lemurs, unrelated to themselves, produced a safe, collaborative and highly productive group.

The fundamental aim of Lemur Health is to take care and enhance your employees' physical and mental health through robust workplace interventions. Creating a healthy and people focused culture enhances wellbeing leading to better engagement and productivity for your business.

Working With the Menopause is the female reproductive health strand of Lemur Health and was developed in response to the need to normalise, educate and manage the menopausal transition in the workplace.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions, the proportion of women aged 50 to 64 in the workforce has risen by more than 50 per cent in the past 30 years.

The menopause usually occurs between 45-55 years of age but 1 in 1000 women will experience this transition before the age of 40.

Women of this age range are likely to have an established role at work, a family to support, eldercare to manage and other midlife challenges.

Unfortunately, during the peri-menopause stage, (which can start up to 10 years earlier) between 30-60% of women experience side effects of intermittent physical and/or psychological symptoms of hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, fatigue, difficulty in concentration, mood disturbances, depression and anxiety - to name a few.

These symptoms are often suffered in silence and not discussed in the context of work.

Working with the Menopause is the collaborative work of Emma Persand and Dr Melanie Smith, a clinical psychologist. Melanie's research with Professor Myra Hunter into cognitive behaviour therapy for menopause symptoms is recognised by the NICE Guidelines as evidence based intervention.

We provide practical solutions to manage the impact of the menopausal transition for women and their workplaces.

Working with the Menopause aims to improve the reproductive wellbeing of women through two services:

Workplace education for all and training for managers, HR and health care professionals

Self referral for confidential group or individual sessions of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for women.
